WEST NYACK ELEMENTARY PTA COMMITTEE LIST


Becoming involved in this PTA gives parents an opportunity to become involved in their child(ren)’s elementary education. Our PTA runs many programs throughout the school year. Some of these committee have chairs, but we need many volunteers to help. Some of the events happen during the school day, some are evening events. Please consider joining one or more of the committees listed below in the 2008/2009 school year. Without your help, these events cannot happen. The committee with existing chair people, we have listed their names. The others we are looking for dedicated people who would like to chair the committee. WNE COMMITTEES AND WHAT THEY DO:


Book Fair: Rosann Ruotolo- Chairperson Each year during the first week in November we hold a Scholastic Book fair here at West Nyack.  The chairperson arranges for the book delivery and coordinates classroom visits.  Volunteers are needed to help set-up fair and help the children choose and purchase new books.  This is a great time to see your child during the school day.  You could work as many hours as you can.  Many volunteers are needed for this event is held all week.

Box tops:Lynn Mueller-Chairperson We collect Box tops as a fundraiser each year. This committee is responsible for coordinating this program: collecting, counting and mailing the box tops.

CANDLE (Clarkstown Area Network for a Drug-Free Life and Environment): Lisa Encolino chairperson Attend one CANDLE meeting monthly and report back to PTA at monthly meeting.

Class Parents Camilla Levine & Danielle Clement Chairpeople- Collect class money and help run class celebrations; chaperone class trips when needed; make phone calls relaying PTA and school-related messages; and work on Halloween Fun Night & Memorial Day picnic(mandatory).

Cultural Arts: Dawn Guarino and Giny Szymanski Chairpeople: Preview and book performances and workshops for all grade levels; handle performer contracts and performance scheduling.

Echo: Karen Moore & Johnna Hraska – Chairpeople Prepare newsletter to be distributed to school community. Collect information from principal, PTA President, committees and organizations that may want information shared with all parents and teachers. Photocopy and distribute.

Fifth Grade Moving-Up: Cathy Montague and Theresa Jung - Co-Chairs Plan and carry out moving-up activities for the fifth graders. This committee is comprised of 5th grade parents and involves monthly meetings and fundraising.

Halloween Fun Night: Karina Ellis & Sara Nybro - Chairpersons Each year we hold this non-fundraising event in October. It is much loved by all of the children. This committee plans the event. It requires attending meetings and on the day of the event decorating and breaking down. This is another great committee for new parents – it is a fun way to get acquainted and although there is work involved, it’s over after the event! Many volunteers are needed.

Health and Safety: Kathy Klassen- Chairperson Bring up issues of health and safety as necessary; gather information on appropriate solutions to such issues.

Holiday Boutique: Trish Dunbar and Camilla Levine - Co-Chairs Each year around the December holidays we have another non-fundraising event in which the children can purchase relatively non-expensive items for family and friends. This committee plans and sets up and then is present to help the children make their choices. This is another fun committee that allows you to see the children. Many volunteers are needed.

Hospitality: need Chairperson This committee is responsible to set up refreshments (coffee and snacks) and then break down for PTA meetings and special school events. We’re looking for people to sign up and be willing to be responsible for one event. There will be one chairperson who will get volunteers and coordinate. This would be a great committee for people who want to do something but don’t have a lot of time to spare.

Kindergarten Orientation: Johnna Hraska chairperson-In February, arrange for refreshments and coordinate coverage at PTA table. In May, organize and assemble folders for kindergarten orientation and again arrange for refreshments and coverage at PTA table. This is another committee that is perfect for people who have limited time availability.
Legislation: Read and summarize federal and state legislation regarding children.

Membership: Camilla Levine -Chairperson Register PTA members at school functions, hand out membership cards and collect membership fee.

PALP:
Megan Jones- Chairperson Parents as Learning Partners. This committee works with the teachers and staff to join in and coordinate readings activities scheduled throughout the year.

Plant Sale: Veronica Archul - Chairperson Each year we hold a plant sale just before Mother’s Day. The children are able to purchase plants as gifts. This committee coordinates this event; arranging for merchandise, transport plants to school, set up and sells plants; fill orders. This is a committee that requires a lot of volunteers and is only a few days of work.

Plant Window: There is a beautiful plant window opposite the main office. This committee makes it grow!

Publishing Center: Trish Dunbar & Tara Clark chairpeople –We sponsor this program that allows the children to publish a beautifully bound book. This committee coordinates schedules with the teachers, interviews the children and publishes the book. Volunteers are always needed for this committee.

Reflections (PTA National Arts program): Lee Shanley-Chairperson Each year we, along with all the other schools in the country, participate in this program. This committee will publicize the theme (that changes each year), collect entries, transport entries to judging site and arrange to display them. The committee also holds a reception to honor all children who enter.

Science-In-A-Shoebox:
Sara Nybro Chairperson This wonderful program sponsored by the PTA allows children to bring home science experiments. These experiments are done at home and then returned to the PTA. The shoeboxes then have to be refilled for the next child. This committee needs volunteers to coordinate the borrowing and refilling system.

School Board
: Trish Grogan - Chairperson Our PTA needs to keep abreast of what’s going on at the School Board Meetings. This committee needs a chairperson who will set up a schedule for volunteers and arrange for people to attend each School Board Meeting and report back to the PTA.

School Pictures: Margaret Alaimo-Chairperson This committee publicizes school picture date, coordinates class visits to the photographer, helps out on picture day, delivers orders to classroom teachers and coordinates retakes.

School Store
: Tara Clark - Chairperson One day a month the PTA runs a store at lunchtime for the children. We don’t make much money but the children love it! This committee “operates” the store by keeping inventory current and being there on store day to set up, break down and sell to the children. Spend time with all the children and volunteer for this committee!

Scholarship: Erica Forkin -Chairperson will have committee to review applications of graduating seniors who had attended West Nyack Elementary. They will choose qualified recipients of scholarships.

Council Scholarship: Erica Forkin-Chairperson Council awards scholarships to 10 students from North HS and 10 from South HS. Committee members review applications and choose recipients of scholarships. There are 4 mandatory meetings.

Staff Luncheon: Camilla Levine & Karen Moore – Chairpersons Each year, to thank our terrific staff, we host a luncheon. This committee organizes this event.

Sweat/T-Shirts: Kelly Morales & Sharon Naughton -Chairpersons: Our children (and their parents) are able to show their school spirit by wearing these beautiful Sweat or T-Shirts. This committee is responsible for selling these items and keeping the inventory current.

Yearbook: Rosann Ruotolo Chairperson -We publish a yearbook each Spring. This committee takes some pictures, most impotantly collects pictures that you have sent in with your name, year, student’s name and teacher . We then arrange the pictures to make a beautiful memory book.
